A Seasonal Guide to Beautiful, Heirloom Photographs
If you’ve ever wondered “When is the best time for family photos?” — you’re not alone. Every season brings something a little different to your images, and choosing the right time of year can make your session feel effortless, beautiful, and true to your family’s style.
As a family and motherhood photographer here in the Canton + Woodstock area, I plan sessions around light, color, and comfort — especially for little ones. Here’s a simple breakdown to help you decide what season is best for your family.
Spring: Soft, Dreamy, and Full of Life
Spring sessions are some of my most requested, especially for moms who love a light, airy look.
What to expect:
Soft green backgrounds
Blooming florals
Comfortable temperatures
Pastel and neutral outfits that photograph beautifully
Best for:
Maternity sessions, motherhood portraits, and families wanting that fresh, new-season glow.
Book by: January–February (spring dates go fast!)
What Time of Year Should You Book Family Photos?
Summer: Golden Light
Summer brings the most golden sunsets of the year — truly magical. If you’re willing to brave the warmth, it’s worth it.
What to expect:
The prettiest evening glow
Barefoot kids, flowy dresses, and playful energy
Later session times (to avoid the heat)
Best for:
Lifestyle sessions, backyard/garden settings, motherhood minis, and families with toddlers who love to move.
Book by: April–May for June–August sessions.
Fall: Warm Colors & Cozy Neutrals
No surprise — fall is the busiest season for family photos. The colors are gorgeous, the air feels crisp, and outfits look amazing.
What to expect:
Warm tones and golden leaves
Layers, sweaters, and cozy textures
A shorter window of peak foliage
Best for:
Families updating yearly photos, holiday cards, and anyone who loves classic autumn color.
Book by: June–July (fall dates book out months ahead!)
Winter: Soft Light & Simple Beauty
Winter sessions can be absolutely stunning, quiet, and timeless.
What to expect:
Soft, diffused natural light
Evergreen tones and minimal backdrops
Earlier session times (because of daylight)
Best for:
In-home newborns, snuggled family sessions, and elegant neutral color palettes.
Book by: September–October for winter dates.
So… What Time Should You Book?
It all comes down to the mood you love:
Dreamy + floral: Spring
Golden + playful: Summer
Warm + classic: Fall
Soft + cozy: Winter
